Dale Earnhardt Jr. – a name that’s synonymous with the sport of NASCAR, and one that is embedded in the heart of many around NASCAR Nation – announced earlier this week his decision to retire at the end of the 2017 season on his own terms. Dale has certainly made an indelible mark on the NASCAR landscape, and although this moment in the sport’s history is bittersweet, many are excited to see what he does next. There will be a huge void to fill after he retires, and there is much to consider when the time comes to choose a replacement for the man whose legacy extends beyond merely a driver.
