NASCAR fans had a lot to celebrate on Sunday. Unfortunately, what goes up usually comes down. The cheers and celebrations after Chase Elliott’s first career NASCAR Cup Series win were no exception.
After witnessing all the glory of Elliott’s win at Watkins Glen International, fans were greeted with some disappointing news about NASCAR’s CEO Brian France. The often absentee leader of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was busted for a DUI and possession of oxycodone sending NASCAR Nation in a spiral of never-ending comments. Of course, we had to address the story during our weekly #NASCARTalk for fans by fans.
We asked fans to share their thoughts on whether the negative news puts a damper on Chase Elliott’s first NASCAR Cup Series win, which included help from his Hall of Famer dad Bill Elliott, who served as his spotter during the race. Our discussion included NBC’s “radio style” broadcast, whether a driver aside from the “Big 3” can win a race, and other hot topics surrounding NASCAR. We gave those who joined the conversation an opportunity to win a bag of Kingsford Premium Wood Pellets courtesy of Kingsford.

Question 1: After such a wonderful weekend of racing sadly we have to talk about something negative. Does the drama with Brian France overshadow Chase Elliott’s first NASCAR Cup Series win? What do you think? Vote and share your thoughts. #NASCARTalk #KingsfordPellets

A1: Chase Elliott's victory was not only great for him, his family, and supporters, but a massive boost of momentum for the entire sport. The recent developments surrounding Brian France sadly put a great Sunday afternoon in the backseat. #NASCAR
— Kobe Lambeth (@KobeLambeth) August 6, 2018
In terms of impact, Chase’s win is far bigger. France was an absentee dodo bird. And now he’s gone. Him being gone is a bigger story for the sport than the crime he committed.

Of course not, this win is a classic.
One of those you celebrate a life time!❤🏁 #Chase #9— CVM (@CVM88JRNATION) August 6, 2018
A1: I do believe that Chase’s win has been overshadowed. All kinds of news outlets are sharing the story of Brian France and only wanting to talk about the negative stuff in NASCAR when they could also be talking about Chase’s first ever cup win! Not saying that 1/2
— tiff (@tiffshandell) August 6, 2018
No. France has been a disappointment to NASCAR for a while now!

Question 2: The Big 3 have dominated, but we have also seen some good racing this season. Is NASCAR “cool to watch again?” #NASCARTalk #KingsfordPellets

I think it's always been cool to watch. But watching the big three win every week has gotten. But like Richard Petty told Bobby Hamilton one time "Watch the guys who are running up front and winning races are racing for 10th at the end of the season."
— Jonathan Thiebaud (@Jtbaud249) August 6, 2018
A2:the second part of this season has really picked up. Ever since Chicago came along, the racing has been great (except Kentucky). While we're still far from being back in the days of the early 2000s, we're starting to move forward. Hopefully we continue this push ahead
— Brock Rowe (@BrockRowePFR) August 6, 2018
A2: It’s been a mildly good season so far even with the dominance of “The Big 3” Of course a lot of people scream for parity this year, but having a ton of winners doesn’t always equate to a great season.
— Kenneth W Lee Jr. (@FrontRowKenny) August 6, 2018
NASCAR has always been cool to watch, now the Astros are cool to watch again! For me it’s been great to watch the 18, 78, & 4 all season. Wondering if/when will the bowtie brigade finally catch Ford & Toyota.
— ryan goodrum (@ryan_goodrum) August 6, 2018
A2: It never stopped being cool to watch for me. If people don’t like the new format they should complain to those (Fan Council) who demanded these changes.
— Larry Lee (@lblee58) August 6, 2018
Question 3: NASCAR and social media. Do you believe social media played a factor in helping “knock NASCAR down? Thoughts? (comment spotted @NASCARonReddit) #NASCARTalk #KingsfordPellets

A3: Yes. Just look at how bad (not necessarily true) reviews can hurt small businesses. It's no different IMO. #NASCARTalk
— Graydon Bunn 🇨🇦 (@SmoothOper88or) August 7, 2018
A3: In some ways yes. I know sometimes I work on Sundays and it's nice to be on break or lunch open twitter or Facebook and see updates on the race. I'm same the way at home sometimes even though I'm watching it on TV.
— Kayla Kaye 🏁 (@bookk14g) August 7, 2018
A3: Somewhat. Social media has helped connect people in the sport (drivers, fans, crews, etc.). People's opinions can be heard more which can be good or bad and NASCAR can use it to improve things. It depends on how individuals react to others opinions
— Brittany Reed (@BrittanyReed42) August 7, 2018
A3: to some degree yes but then again the internet as a whole can negative on anything.
— Patrick R. Dron, Martin and Ryan Truex fan (@patrickdron78) August 6, 2018
I think social media has been just as helpful as it’s been harmful for the sport. If anything, it’s tool to reach a new younger audience. It’s NASCAR that has been doing the most damage, social media is just a place for the upset fans to voice the opinions they already had.

Question 4: “We have seen 8 different winners this year. In the closing races before the playoffs, who has the best shot of winning a race aside from the Big 3?” – @FrontRowKenny #NASCARTalk #KingsfordPellets

I think Erik Jones has a great shot to win at Bristol after his run in the night race last year. Very likely that we get an upset win at the Brickyard again, maybe Bowman or Suarez.
— Cameron Richardson (@therichreport) August 6, 2018
My money is on @KurtBusch at Indy. Ford dominance plus unconventional pit strategy…..he’s due.
— Stephanie Hayden (@stephshade) August 7, 2018
Penske cars are due with the speed of Ford this year they have been conspicuously quiet.
— Chad Marquis (@chadrmarquis) August 7, 2018
@BMSupdates is coming up and larson is due for one there… blaney could win that one too.
— Danny Swanson (@DannySwanson90) August 7, 2018
Chase has really started to turn this season around. Also, in his career, his best races have come in the playoffs so if he keeps this up, I could honestly see him turn into a contender
— Brock Rowe (@BrockRowePFR) August 6, 2018
Question 5: What Jimmie Johnson did at Watkins Glen pushing Chase Elliott after he ran out of gas was the icing on the cake to top off a great day for NASCAR. Do you see him back in the winner’s circle making the playoffs? #NASCARTalk #KingsfordPellets

A5: I’ve learned that you can never count him out. I think they’ve got some stuff to figure out but I see him back in Victory Lane before the playoffs!
— tiff (@tiffshandell) August 7, 2018
A5: I’m not sure if his win will come in the next few races but he’s certainly playoff bound at the moment. Maybe a random spurt will happen during the Playoffs.
— Kenneth W Lee Jr. (@FrontRowKenny) August 7, 2018
A5: It appears the Chevrolet teams are getting their heads around the Camaro. JJ isn't washed up. I think he'll win in the next month.#NASCARTalk
— Graydon Bunn 🇨🇦 (@SmoothOper88or) August 7, 2018
A5: maybe.
— Patrick R. Dron, Martin and Ryan Truex fan (@patrickdron78) August 7, 2018
A5: I think Johnson will make the Playoffs. Definitely wouldn't be surprised if he scored a victory before the end of 2018. Hendrick is improving compared to earlier in the season. #NASCAR
— Kobe Lambeth (@KobeLambeth) August 7, 2018
Question 6: For the second time this year, NBC did a “radio style” broadcast. Did you like the broadcast? Do you like it better than the traditional style broadcast? What do you think about the polo shirts as opposed to the suits? Thoughts? #NASCARTalk #KingsfordPellets

Good broadcast. I like how they’ve been trying different things.
— Dave Harris (@GiveMeAProject) August 7, 2018
The polos look good. But that shouldn’t matter too much. What was great about the radio-style broadcast was how specific they were about what was going on on-track. I much prefer the report of what’s going on instead of analysis.
— NASCAR Ponderings (Matthew Fossum) (@NASCARthinkings) August 7, 2018
Love the radio style broadcast. It made the racing seem special, then again I've havr always been partial to the radio broadcast of the races especially the @MRNRadio crew.
— A. Williams (@Thebohindel) August 7, 2018
A6: Seemed like Dale Jr. Overtook the broadcast, at times. Which is ok. But you could tell he was trampling over people with his excitement. Not bad. Just a note. He gets worked up and thats a plus for sure.
— Charlie Bowles (@CharlieBowles6) August 7, 2018
I do prefer this style of announcing. It doesn’t matter to me what they wear, camera should rarely be on them unless the race is really dull.
— James Powell (@jfpowell3) August 7, 2018
I'm not sure why but this style of broadcasting just sounds more exciting. It really brings to light just how important the commentary is to the overall enjoyment of an event. I said it last year I think, @TheMikeBagley is a much needed breath of fresh air.
— NascarFanSS (@NascarFanSS) August 7, 2018
Yes and yes. How many people turn off volume and listen to MRN. That says it all….actually call the race and not being involved in some inane conversation. Also no suits needed. I mean this is NASCAR. .
— Stephanie Hayden (@stephshade) August 7, 2018
A6: seemed like it was more of a hybrid between radio and tv. Last year with Leigh Diffey, it felt like a true radio call.
